You can’t crack open your 2020 calendar before the shipping carriers announce new prices for the new year. Here, we provide you with the basics of what to expect with FedEx and the final retail rates for United States Postal Rates for shipping parcels in 2020.

Here’s the low-down on rate changes for FedEx and US Postal Service:

FedEx—Effective on January 6, 2020; January 26, 2020

Ground, air and international rates increase 4.9% for FedEx.  FedEx freight will increase by 5.9%. And later on the Jan. 26th, changes to surcharges making it increasingly more expensive to ship large or heavy items through FedEx. Details on FedEx shipping rate changes are here. 

Surcharges are going up on January 26th. For Ground shipments, these additional services are expected to increase in cost: Additional Handling; Additional Handling – Non-stackable; Delivery Signature Options, Collect on Delivery (COD); and Peak – Additional Handling. FedEx 2020 Surcharge Rate Example:

Additional Handling Surcharge will apply to FedEx Express U.S. domestic and FedEx Ground U.S. domestic packages if the packages weigh 50 lbs. or greater (versus 70 lbs. or greater in the past). Export & International shipments maintain the 70 lbs. or greater threshold.

U.S. Postal Service—Effective on January 26, 2020

eFulfillment Service has the newly confirmed and finalized rate changes for the U.S. Postal Service. Priority Mail Express is expected to increase 3.5%, an average across both retail and commercial rates. Priority Mail is expected to increase 4.1% and Media Mail rates will increase 1.99%, also averaging the retail and commercial rate increases.

Last year’s First Class Retail Package Service rate change increased fees by an average of 11.9%, so the 2020 increases are relatively minor. Using First Class Retail Package Service, for packages less than a pound, ecommerce companies can move product across the U.S. to zone 8 for $6.27 or less in 1 to 3 days, with tracking. eFulfillment Service is seeing rate increases for parcels under a pound as low as 1.59% and as high as 5.03%, with an average 3.76% in retail U.S. Postal First Class Parcel rates.

For example, a 9-ounce package (or heavier) will see a retail rate increase of 19-23 cents, depending on which zone is its destination. At retail rates, a 15.99-ounce package headed to Zone 8 will cost an additional 23 cents, or $6.50.

The USPS policy of no surcharges for fuel, residential delivery or regular Saturday & holiday delivery continues, as well as its policy for no-cost returns for undeliverable and forwarded packages. Check out the official USPS rate change press release for details.
