What Is Dimensional (DIM) Weight?
Dimensional (DIM) weight, also called volumetric weight, is a pricing method carriers use to charge based on a package’s size, not just its actual weight. It’s calculated by dividing a package’s volume (length x width x height) by the carrier’s DIM weight divisor. Carriers charge based on whichever is higher: the actual weight or the DIM weight.
What's the Difference Between Dimensional Weight and Actual Weight?
For packages larger than about one cubic foot, shipping carriers charge based on whichever weight is higher: the actual weight, measured on a scale, or the DIM weight, calculated from the package’s dimensions divided by the carrier’s DIM weight divisor. A light but bulky package, such as a 5-pound lampshade in a 13 x 18 x 11 inch box, can have a DIM weight of 19 pounds or more, resulting in higher shipping costs than its actual weight would suggest.
What Are the DIM Weight Formulas for FedEx, UPS, and USPS?
DIM weight is calculated as length x width x height, divided by the carrier’s DIM weight divisor. FedEx and UPS daily rates use a divisor of 139; UPS retail rates and USPS use a divisor of 166. Whichever weight is higher, actual or DIM, is what the carrier uses to calculate the shipping charge.
What Are Example DIM Weights for Common Box Sizes?
