Hazardous Materials Handling

Hazmat Order Fulfillment Policy

Storage, handling, and outbound fulfillment for select hazardous materials common in consumer goods, cosmetics, and electronics — Limited Quantity shipments of Class 3 and Class 9 only.

Accepted Hazardous Materials

We accept and process Limited Quantity shipments of the following hazard classes only, in line with standard e-commerce fulfillment practice.

ClassCategoryCommon examples
3
Flammable Liquids Perfume & cologne, nail polish & remover, essential oils, alcohol-based hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, alcohol-based cleaning or setting sprays, some liquid adhesives.
9
Miscellaneous (Lithium Batteries) Smartphones, laptops & tablets, wireless earbuds, power banks, smartwatches, e-cigarettes & vapes, electric toothbrushes, Bluetooth speakers.
Note

“Limited Quantity” is a DOT-defined threshold, not a marketing term — fully regulated hazmat shipments outside that threshold are not accepted at any volume.

Prohibited Hazardous Materials

Every other hazard class is turned away, without exception — for warehouse and carrier safety, and because federal transport rules leave no Limited Quantity path for these categories.

Shipping Methods & Restrictions

Carrier rules and federal transport regulations narrow every hazmat order (Class 3 and Class 9 alike) to one method.

Ground Shipping AllowedUSPS Ground Advantage — the only approved method for hazmat orders.
Air transport Not availableNext Day Air, 2nd Day Air, and other expedited air options.
International Not availableInternational shipping for hazmat items.
Transit time Typically 2–5 business days — slightly longer than standard, since ground is the only lane.

Inbound Warehouse & Prep Requirements

Every hazmat SKU must clear these five checks before it reaches our dock.

  • Proper packaging

Leak-proof seals on liquids (induction seals or taped caps); packaging that prevents accidental activation in transit or storage.

  • Pre-marking

Master cartons arrive bearing the standard Limited Quantity diamond mark.

  • Battery safety

Class 9 battery items ship with terminals protected against short-circuiting and devices packaged to prevent accidental power-on.

  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS)

Submitted to the compliance team for approval before any new hazmat SKU ships to the warehouse.

  • SKU setup

Hazmat items flagged explicitly in inventory management at SKU creation — not applied after the fact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1What exactly does “Limited Quantity” mean?

Hazardous materials packaged in small containers that pose lower transport risk. Exact volume and weight limits vary by chemical and hazard class, as set by the DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

Q2Can I ship aerosol hairspray or spray paint?

No. Aerosols fall under Class 2 (Gases), which sits outside the two accepted categories — Class 3 and Class 9 only.

Q3Do you supply Limited Quantity labels for outbound shipments?

Yes. Outbound shipping stations carry the required DOT Limited Quantity labels, and the system applies them automatically to any package containing a flagged hazmat SKU.

Q4Will USPS Ground Advantage delay my customers’ orders?

Rarely by much — Ground Advantage typically delivers in 2–5 business days across the contiguous US. Because air transport is legally off the table for these items, expedited options simply can’t be offered at checkout.

Q5What happens if a prohibited hazmat item shows up at the warehouse?

It’s quarantined immediately. You’ll be notified to arrange a specialized hazmat freight carrier to remove it at your expense; non-compliance fees may apply.
