Carrier Surcharges for Peak Season Now Applying to Returns Season

Typically, online order shippers like U.S. Postal Service, FedEx and DHL have added a surcharge to fees holiday season. Those charges initially applied to packages being shipped after the Thanksgiving holiday and stopped before the New Year’s Day holiday. With shoppers buying online gifts earlier and earlier, those surcharges have also started earlier and earlier, now apply as early as the begining of October for some ecommerce shippers.

Aditionally, carriers are now applying peak season surcharges long after the consumer buying season, indicating that they are recouping surcharges on returns as well as initial gift purchases. 

As ecommerce shopping grows, so does the practice of returning items ordered online. To mimic in-store shopping, some consumers purchase multiple sizes of apparel, try them on, and return all but the size that fits. The peak gift buying season generates lots of items purchased for others and those items have a higher chance of needing to be returned. All that return shipping activity is concentrated after December 25th.
